How much gasoline did the one million mile Saab owned by Peter Gilbert use during its 17 year run? The Saab model supposedly got 28 miles to the gallon. Divide that into 1,001,035 and you get 35,751 gallons of gasoline.

The average gasoline tanker holds 9000 gallons of gas, which means Peter used about 4 of them all by himself.

Peter Gilbert also changed the oil faithfully using synthetic oil, and maintained the car according to the manufacturers maintenance schedule.

The tires were changed every 45,000 miles. A little math tells us Peter bought 22 sets of tires for his car. If he changed his oil every 5,000 miles he went through around 600 quarts of synthetic oil.

Now that is faithful upkeep, and look where it got him. Where ever he wanted to go. When this traveling salesman decided to donate his car to a museum, it wasn't because the car didn't run any longer.

It was because of the frame rust and damage weather conditions and road salt had caused. Since he had been in 8 accidents involving deer, he didn't feel the car would be safe if it was in another accident. He went out and bought himself another Saab.

Peter used the car to travel all over the state of Wisconsin. He bought the car for himself in November 1989 and used it just about every day since.

The Saab's transmission was replaced at 200,000 miles, and other that some repairs from accidents, and regular maintenance the car was in original condition.

When the odometer reached 600,000 miles and no oil was burning, Peter knew the car would reach the 1,000,000 mile mark. He has pictures of the odometer with 999,999 and 000,000 on it.

Just goes to show you what your car will do if you give it a little TLC.
